The Other Crate Fair is by far one of the less crusty, dad rock orientated record fairs i've been lucky to be involved with in Aotearoa. Always a top bunch of diggers, from fresh faced beat junkies to jaded, balding stalwarts. A great way for me to catch up in one fowl swoop with old mates and like minded characters.

As usual i'll be sticking predominantly with classic 'reissued' black orientated albums from the 1960/70/80's and Jamaican 7's from the Dub Store in Japan.
Big up's to Apera & Dustin for doing what they do best........

Here’s my top selections from the crates…

Ramon Morris – Sweet Sister Funk LP (Groove Merchant) REISSUE

Always amazes me the albums that you think will move quickly and the  one’s that sit there gathering dust awaiting their right owner – this falls in the latter category.

One of the harder titles to find original copies of from the Groove Merchant label. Classic jazz-funk from tenorman Ramon Morris recorded in 1972. Great balance of fierce grooves balancing between mainstream and experimental leanings. As sampled by The Beatnuts  on Buggin’ and also by DJ Day.

Trammy (Vin Gordon) – Horns Of Paradise 7” (Dub Store) REISSUE

Every home should have this. One of favourite cut’s from the wide selection of Jamaican 7’s we’ll have available from the mighty Dub Store label/shop/distributor over in Japan.
1970’s mod/skinhead reggae of the highest order from reggae trombonist  Vin Gordon in a rock steady fashion. Designed to shake down the walls of Babylon!!

The Lebron Brothers Orchestra – Psychedelic Goes Latin LP (Cotique) REISSUE

Got ‘turned’ onto this album while living in San Francisco and playing at one of my local bars in the latino Mission district. Some of the weirdest sounds ever cut into latin music from this golden which resulted in setting this album apart.
Four brothers born and raised in Puerto Rico and living in Brooklyn delivering bugaloos and shingalings on an electronic tip. As the sleeve notes state on the back……….”You have just purchased a psychedelic album
and now we are going to turn on and share a trip”…….

Cloud One – Patty Duke 12” (Sound Of New York) REISSUE

‘True Fact’ – This record has not left my record bag since I purchased it at Honest Jons back in the day.
Groundbreaking and essential production from the disco genius Peter Brown that paid homage to actress/singer/activist ‘Patty Duke’ (probably best known for her character in the cult movie ‘Valley Of The Dolls’).

104bpm stripped back funk/disco instrumental monster that also accompanied a popular dance move in the proto hip-hop scene called the ‘Patty Duke’ in 1979. Even Spoonie Gee got onboard and used it as the backing for his ‘Spoonin’ Rap’. A staple cut at every Turnaround and one of Conch’s most re-ordered records. ESSENTIAL!!

Dexter Story – Bahir LP (Soundway)

Bringing us up to date with one of our current favourites from the last couple of months. Dexter Story dips and dives between the deep well of East African music  and the sounds of his hometown Los Angeles.

Fusing Ethiopian jazz, Tuareg grooves, Somalian soul with American soul, funk and jazz this album has been on high rotation in our shop ULO here in Raglan. Produced by Carlos Nino and featuring Sudan Archives, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson & Jimetta Rose amounst others, this is another sure shot release from Soundway Records. Big up’s Mark de Clive-Lowe for hipping me to this guy.
