A last minute Top 5 from Dustin of Dusty Crates to give you a teaser of what to expect in the crates tomorrow.
My crates are unashamedly filled with my taste in music. So if you like Funk/Soul/Jazz/Disco, lots of Afro and Latin, bits of Hip-Hop, some House and Reggae , then you’re likely to find something in my crates at The Other Crate Fair.
So here are my picks for what to check out in the Dusty Crates:
Okyerema Asante - Sabi (Get Down) LP (KALITA)
2 x 15 minute plus afro-disco stompers here. Reissued and repressed twice by Kalita Records it is so good.
Okyerema toured and recorded with Hugh Masekela and Oneness Of Juju.
Q - The Voice Of Q 12” (ISLE OF JURA)
Australian label Isle Of Jura is producing some excellent reissues with the 2LP Jura Soundsystem compilation and the forthcoming Mister Wong 12”
This one is my favourite, with it’s electro-disco flavour, it always gets people asking what it is when I’ve played it out.
Alice Smith - Love Endeavour (Maurice Fulton Remix) 12” (SOUTH STREET)
I was put onto this record by hearing it at Benji B’s first Turnaround gig back in 2008. I almost went and paid far too much for the rare original press, so I was glad to see it pop up on reissue for the much more reasonable regular 12” price.
Bohannon - Stop & Go LP (DAKAR)
This is one of my go to soul/funk records. My picks from the record are ‘Save Our Souls’ and ‘Singing A Song For My Mother’. Recorded in 1973, this LP shows off his more mellow soul sound as opposed to the disco sound of his later years.
Brian Bennett - Voyage - A Journey Into Discoid Funk LP (ISLE OF JURA)
Another reissue for Isle Of Jura setting the bootleg versions right. I was put onto this record by Kayne West of all people. ‘Solstice’ was sampled for a G.O.O.D. Friday release back in 2010. As the title suggests, it’s sci-fi funk oddness.
