George Duke - Follow The Rainbow LP (EPIC)
‘Follow the Rainbow’, released via Epic Records, is the thirteenth studio album by American keyboardist and record producer George Duke.
From Allmusic.com, “Follow the Rainbow is, in fact, a creative album, and it's an album that has very little to do with jazz. The LP includes a few fusion instrumentals, including the Brazilian-flavored "Festival." But 90% of Follow the Rainbow is devoted to R&B, and anyone who judges it by those standards instead of jazz standards will have to agree that Duke is triumphant on sweaty funk tunes ("Party Down," "I Am for Real") as well as mellow soul ballads and slow jams like "Say That You Will," "Straight From the Heart," and the Earth, Wind & Fire-influenced "Sunrise." This album is consistently excellent, but it isn't recommended to jazz snobs -- only those with a healthy appreciation of 1970s soul and funk will enjoy this album.”
EPMD - Business As Usual LP (DEF JAM)
Business As Usual is the 3rd studio album from Hip-Hop duo EPMD, released in 1990 on Def Jam. Classic era Hip-Hop production from Erick Sermon and Parish Smith.
From The Source:
“Although the project is titled Business as Usual, the sound of the album was largely different than what had made EPMD famous on earlier releases. The production on their first two projects consisted mostly of samples and simple drum patterns. On Business as Usual the sound is more complex and the drum patterns are more involved. Erick and Parrish stepped the game up and ventured away from the tradition sample-heavy beats that were prominent in New York during this era.”
“The three singles from this project, “Gold Digger”, “Rampage” featuring LL Cool J, and “Give the People”, had high reception in the Hip Hop community; two of them claimed spots on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. “Gold Digger” peaked at #14 and “Rampage” at #30. After this project, EPMD went on to release four more successful studio LPs.”
Segun Bucknor - Poor Man No Get Brother 2LP (STRUT)
Nigerian Afro-funk/soul from Segun Bucknor from 1969 - 1975. From ParisDJs.com:
“Working around Nigeria during the ‘70s in the shadow of the great Fela Kuti, Bucknor’s approach was intelligent and understated, varying between hard blasts of funk and extended, Afro jazz-based moods reflecting on Nigerian society with his bands the Assembly (1968 to 1970) and the Revolution (1970 to 1974).”
