The music on this winning double-sider was written by Tony Baron and Gery Franois, two Belgian producers that were involved in several musical projects on the New Beat scene in the 1980s. They worked under many aliases and recorded the Teknokrat’s haunting “What Did She Say?” at the famous Studio Madeleine in Brussels in 1989. Prompted by Jean Martin from Espera Records, Baron adapted the music into a further two songs to be released that year, Virginity’s melancholic “The Key”, and the surprising but ear catching collaboration with the label’s soukous stars, Ben Nyamabo’s Les Choc Stars Du Zaire. It is still a mystery how the seeds were planted for the one-off pairing that culminated in the electronic soukous bomb “Nakombe Nga”. What is certain is that it is set to light up dancefloors worldwide.

Some words from Tom on the new album.
This record is about...growing up. I think. It's about dealing with your own stuff for once. Accepting responsibility, maybe. It's a self help book addressed to myself. And just like every other piece of art ever made in history of the hominid, I was going through some shit when I was making it. I'd just left home and everyone I knew, looking to chase a dream. It was an awkward phase, like stage two puberty. I was learning how to be grown. Humility had my pride in a headlock. I was the old man at the art exhibition, the young boy at the art gallery. Everyone was in a K-hole, I was at K-Mart.
A video – filmed entirely inside the crumbling shell ofAuckland's beloved St James Theatre – is out on Friday.

PRE-ORDER: V/A - Antipodean Anomalies LP (LEFT EAR RECORDS)
Complilation of Australian and New Zealand tunes made in the 1970s and 1980s, due out September.
Compiled by Left Ears own Chris Bonato and Umut Turkeri
.For musicians inhabiting the Antipodean countries of Australia and New Zealand during the 70’s and 80’s, it was a geographically and culturally isolating environment. Boutique shops, community radio and mail order exchanges championed independent and contemporary music from across the globe. It was, however, this isolation that caused a number of small community-focused scenes to evolve, creating their own unique interpretation and reappropriation of outside influences. Through both these scenes and government initiatives, a vast amount of music emerged on self-released and independent labels.
Yet, even among small scenes that were creating unique sounds, a number of artists seemed to be making music that was neither here nor there, often meshing together numerous genres and influences to create anomalous sounds. Artists like Olev Muska along with Ingrid Slamer meshed traditional folk songs of their Estonian heritage with cutting edge computer technology. Ngahiwi Apanui used his native language of Te Reo and a “cheap drum machine” to create a pulsating tale that highlights the creation of Aotearoa (the Maori name for New Zealand); while the Free Radicals would sing through PVC pipes to construct their vision of post-apocalyptic tribal music. Sydney’s Nic Lyon used his classical training to craft a distinctive gem which matched eastern and African influenced instruments with synchopated drum machines, while artists like Delaney Venn and Toy Division managed to challenge their post-punk sensibilities by blending both dub and atmospheric sounds respectively.
PRE-ORDER: Trio Ternura - A Gira / Last Tango In Paris 7" (MELODIES INTERNATIONAL)
Due out September 7th
With MEL012, Trio Ternura – A Gira / Last Tango In Paris, we are very excited to move from North America into Brazilian territory reissuing one of our favourite pieces of 1970s MPB (Música popular brasileira) written and mostly recorded by a single family.
Trio Ternura (or Tenderness Trio) consisted of two sisters, Jussara, Jurema and their brother Robson. Their father, Umberto Silva was a revered Brazilian songwriter and recording artist who introduced his children to the music world at a very young age.
After performing some songs on broadcast television and at festivals early on, their father Umberto and brother, Beto Scala wrote A Gira for the Trio to record. The song is a tribute to nature, spirituality and mindfulness. The hommage is made through a form of “cantico” (chant) or “saudação” (salutation), aimed at invoking an Orisha named “Oxossi”. Otherwise known as “Saints”, Orishas are the deities worshiped in the Afro-Brazilian religion of “Candomblé”.
African religion and culture have had an undeniable impact in Brazil, especially in music and on artists with African roots as its rituals were often accompanied by music comprising highly percussive drumming. As a result, A Gira, an homage to a Candomblé deity recorded in 1973 involves mesmerizing polyrhythms from the very first few bars and throughout, followed by the sisters’ soaring vocals and impeccable instrumentation. It’s a song that they can really identify with, in their own words “it has the dancing, the expression, the lyrics and musical relaxation - something very Brazilian”.
Originally released on Polydor in Brazil, fully licensed and remastered from the tapes – MEL012 comes forth in its 7-inch original vinyl format and digitally, b/w Trio Ternura's stunning version of Gato Barbieri's Last Tango in Paris and is accompanied by the first bilingual Melozine !

PRE-ORDER: Arvo - Bikini / So Deep 12" (STRANGELOVE MUSIC)
Due out 31 July
For its second release, Strangelove resurrects two cuts from Australian synth-pop duo ARVO’s much-mythologized 1984 album “Luna”.Arvo was the project of Sydney-siders Deborah Gray and Roy Nicolson.
In the early Eighties Gray was playing, writing and touring as a solo artist in Australia & offshore, securing a record deal and touring with her band in Germany until 1983. Nicolson had also spent time aboard and between 1977-1982 worked as synth pro-grammer and session musician in the UK, collaborating with producers such as Trevor Horn and Barry Blue.
Having both spent time in Europe, beguiled by the continent’s liberated synth-pop textures, each musician returned down-under to discover a still doggedly rock orientated landscape. Undeterred, Gray looked to build on the interest in her solo material, by CBS New York, by imagining a sophisticated visual and electronic duo alternative.
She found musical partnership with Nicolson and his Sydney home studio, where an album’s worth of demos were written and formed by the new duo they named ARVO.To most Aussies, the word “Arvo” was a slang term for the part of the day when one could legitimately crack open a tinny. It certainly did not denote the kind of theatrical, synthesized opus that “Luna” presented as. Unfortunately as so of-ten occurs, major label misjudgement and local radio’s rock obsession left the album to unjustly slip under the radar.
Two selections from “Luna” are rescued here: the hazy “Bikini” with its elec-tronic Ipanema vibe that nostalgically recalls Antipodean beach culture and “So Deep”, which drags us into a synthetic undertow where we find space to reflect on the nature of our dreams. Also presented is a reimagined ‘So Deep’’ instrumental from Australia’s synth-pop scholar-in-chief Hysteric, while French M.O.T.M. Shelter tailors Bikini into an excursion version.

PRE-ORDER: Womack & Womack - MPB (Missin' Persons Bureau) / Paradise Ballroom Mix 12" (MELODIES INTERNATIONAL)
Due Out May 25th on Melodies International
With MEL011, it is our immense pleasure to direct focus towards both Soul and House royalty, selecting and reissuing two of Frankie Knuckles’ scarcer remixes of an all time classic: Womack & Womack – MPB (Missin’ Persons Bureau).
A. MPB (Missin' Persons Bureau)(Paradise Ballroom Mix)
B. MPB (Missin' Persons Bureau)(Folk Version)
Now known as Zekkariyas and Zeriiya, partners Cecil and Linda Womack, two eminent members in an extensive lineage of music artistry (i.e. Bobby Womack was Zekkariyas' brother, Zeriiya is Sam Cooke's daughter) engaged in one of music history’s most successful and exciting singing and song writing partnerships in the early 1980s.
Zeriiya says her process with Zekkariyas flowed like water, their shared complicity and talent led them to write and produce strings of chart topping hits and classic albums as Womack & Womack but also for other renowned artists of the time such as Patti LaBelle, Teddy Pendergrass and the O’Jays to only name a few.
The original version of Missin’ Persons Bureau was first released in 1988 on “Conscience” (Island Records), a classic album with impeccable instrumentation and thoughtful and relatable narratives that reflect on the nature of life, true friendship, love or in the case of MPB, it’s subsequent loss.
Following the release of the LP, Island records founder Chris Blackwell introduced the idea of getting Missin’ Persons Bureau reworked by House legend Frankie Knuckles and whilst the Womacks weren’t originally set on the idea of having their songs remixed by other artists, Blackwell who Zeriiya describes as a “record label manager seriously involved in making sure the project is what the creators really want it to be” had earned their trust.
With these remixes, Frankie managed to turn a radio hit into underground club classics. The Paradise Ballroom mix conserves the essence of the original, reinterpreting the rhythm section whilst drawing it out over 8 minutes, with expert tension building and release clearly aimed at the dance floor. The Folk Version presents a beatless interpretation of the Ballroom mix, focusing on the uplifting vocal arrangements and mesmerising guitar performance, truly beautiful!
MEL011 comes forth as a 12” with the original artwork, restored and lovingly re-mastered from the original tapes.

PRE-ORDER: Moodymann - Pitch Black City Reunion 12" (KDJ)
New Kenny Dixon Release - Due Out Soon

UPCOMING: Volcano / The Beat Gangsters – Vanonyana Lava / Chappies 12" (AFROSYNTH)
Kwaito 12-inch featuring two forgotten bass-heavy cuts from South Africa in the early 90s. Volcano is a sought after tune right now (so difficult to get an original copy!) while the Beat Gangsters are a new introduction (to us) from Okapi's vaults..TIP!
Hot on the heels the label’s debut release Burnin’ Beat, Johannesburg-based Afrosynth Records’ second release is a 12” of two bass-heavy cuts of obscure ‘90s kwaito from South Africa.
Founded in the early 80s by Richard Makhubele, Volcano’s signature brand of Shangaan disco made them one of the most popular bands of the ‘bubblegum’ era, releasing a string of big-selling albums with the Gallo label. But by 1993 things in South Africa were changing fast, both politically and musically. Volcano had left Gallo to join Eric Frisch Productions (EFP) in search of greater independence. On their 1993 album Tshigubu Tshanga they began to experiment with the new house-inspired sound of kwaito courtesy of producer Malcolm ‘X’ Makume, with one track in particular standing out: ‘Vanonyana Lava’.
The song, its title Shangaan for ‘These Women’, is according to frontman Makhubele a simple story “about women in a nightclub or a tavern… You buy the women their drinks, but when they’re finished drinking then they run away.” More important than the lyrics is the song’s massive bass hook and distinctly South African groove, which 25 years after its original release have put it back in demand for DJs and diggers mining the South African sound for fresh inspiration.
‘Vanonyana Lava’ was a notable departure from the typical Volcano sound. “Kwaito music was becoming bigger, more powerful,” remembers Makhubele of the band’s foray into kwaito. “So we decided to do at least a track and see if people would love it, then we’d do more. By that time the Volcano sound was very popular, and that kwaito sound was slowly coming in the market. Our fans were happy for it.”
Volcano soon followed this early kwaito success with The Bold & The Beautiful in 1994, the year of South Africa’s first democratic elections. But with the drastic changes of the decade the band was soon relegated to history as a new generation of young kwaito stars became the voice of South Africa’s youth.
On the flip-side of this new release is an even more obscure track from the record bag of Afrosynth Records’ DJ Okapi. The Beat Gangsters were a short-lived studio project made up of Willi Mau Mau and Mad T Doctor, in-house producers for Mob Music, an independent label set up by Eric Frisch (after the demise of EFP) that put out a string of influential club releases in the mid-90s, among the last albums to be pressed to vinyl in South Africa. Named after a popular South African brand of gum, ‘Chappies’ was originally released on the 1995 album Mob Table Dance.

PRE-ORDER: Dabrye's New LP 'Three/Three' + Represses Of Early Releases On Ghostly International
12 years after his stellar Two/Three release, Dabrye aka Tadd Mullinix follows up strong with the final and third volume!
.
When Ann Arbor's Tadd Mullinix began exploring hip-hop under the name Dabrye 20 years ago, he soon honed in on a startling vision of what the genre could be: ingenious, refined, daring. This vision came to life across two albums for Ghostly International — 2001's One/Three and its 2006 follow-up Two/Three — with each record further positioning the quiet Michigan producer as one of his generation's best, equally comfortable creating minimalist instrumental meditations or sharp rap salvos. In the late 2000s, following critical acclaim and accolades from both peers and inspirations (including the late Jay Dee with whom Mullinix collaborated before his untimely passing), Mullinix put the Dabrye moniker on ice and dedicated himself to other genres and ideas. All the while the influence of his work on a new generation of electronic musicians continued to make itself felt in subtle but meaningful ways.
All this changes in 2018 as Dabrye makes his long-awaited return with Three/Three, a razor-sharp rap album that brings to completion a prophetic trilogy. Mullinix's incisive productions provide the backdrop for equally acute rhymes that run the gamut from intergenerational observations and being your best self to back alley deals and having fun in the ride. Guests include indie rap legend DOOM, whose previous collaboration with Dabrye remains a point of reference for many, Wu Tang storyteller Ghostface Killah, L.A word fanatic Jonwayne, and Long Island's rugged surrealist Roc Marciano. Most importantly Three/Three is, much like its predecessor, an unfettered celebration of Detroit-area talent with Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Kadence, Quelle Chris, Danny Brown, Shigeto, Clear Soul Forces and more all lending their touch to Dabrye's return.
The blend of American and British dance music, hip-hop sampling, and Jamaican sound clash energy that underpinned Two/Three remains a quiet, guiding principle. At the same time Mullinix rejoices in a refreshed perspective, having had time to incubate ideas and find clarity in the distance between albums and the evolution of scenes. The beats are looser and less angular, more embracing of repetition. Organic techniques inspired by soul and jazz round off some of the harsher sonics.
Three/Three marks the return of an innovator after close to a decade of silence. Despite what the title might imply, the album isn't the end of the story but rather the completion of a creative arc. Expect more Dabrye in the near future. The game is far from over.

PRE-ORDER: Ebo Taylor & The Pelikans - Ebo Taylor & The Pelikans LP (MR BONGO)
Due in store very soon
Ebo Taylor is a legendary guitarist, composer, arranger and producer from Accra, Ghana. A leading light of Ghanaian music since the 1960’s, Taylor is still touring and recording, and at the age of 80 will be releasing a brand new studio album on Mr Bongo in 2018.
For this album, Ebo joined forces with 12-piece band ‘The Pelikans’ — from the Cape Coast region of Ghana — led by Bessa Simmona, with rhythm guitarist Fifi Orleans Lindsay. A genuine ‘holy-grail’ of Ghanaian music and one of Ebo’s most sought-after.
The album was released on the small Abookyi label. Named after a nightclub they played in called PELIKANS, and sung in English and Fante, this was the first album where Ebo sang on tracks, such as the classic ‘Come Along’, on which he also plays keyboard. This song clearly defined a new direction in highlife and has become a Ghanaian funk anthem. ‘Come Along’ formed the basis of Sadat X’s ‘Remember That’ hip hop jam from 2011.
This official Mr Bongo re-issue is packaged in our new & improved heavyweight ‘tip-on’ sleeves; printed in Japan, pressed on high quality vinyl, with label designs and artwork as per the original release.
