Join two of BBE’s most prolific artists and compilers, Mr Thing & Chris Read on a voyage into the mysterious, strange and wonderful world of Library Music, courtesy of Cavendish Music. Founded in 1937 and originally known as Boosey & Hawkes Recorded Music Library, Cavendish Music is the largest independent Library Music publisher in the UK and also represents a host of music catalogues across the globe.

During the Library Music heyday of the 60s and 70s, thousands of original instrumental tracks were produced across a broad range of genres for companies like Cavendish, who then created vinyl and tape collections, often arranged by theme or mood, for their customers in radio, television and film. Cult British TV shows such as The Sweeney and The Professionals as well as documentaries and feature films relied heavily on these catalogues, and companies like KPM, De Wolfe and Boosey & Hawkes went a long way toward defining the sound of British popular culture at the time.

Never commercially available, music created for these libraries that never made it to the promised land of TV or Radio was destined to languish in Cavendish Music’s vast London vault; only recently unearthed by a new generation of DJs and producers searching for rare gems or a perfect sample.

Mr Thing & Chris Read were first invited to examine the contents of the Cavendish Music archive in 2014 as part of WhoSampled’s ‘Samplethon’ event in which producers created new tracks against the clock using sample material mined from the catalogue. Whilst digging through box upon box of records and tapes looking for interesting sounds, the pair also discovered a host of 70s library music which has not only stood the test of time, but deserves to be heard in its original form.
From dramatic big band numbers reminiscent of Lalo Schifrin’s film scores to atmospheric proto-hip hop instrumentals produced before the genre’s existence, right through to fairly straightforward jazz and funk cuts; this amazing collection of music is sure to inspire and delight DJs and beat-makers the world over.

It’s circa nineteen-seventy-something and Aotearoa New Zealand is a nation ready to groove.

With the world’s largest Maori and Polynesian populations, 50 million sheep, two major islands, long hot summers, longer damp winters, AM-only radio and, until 1975, just the one glorious television channel, what else was there to do? Rabble-rousing (and not always sober) Prime Minister Rob Muldoon was in his pomp, the economy was in the toilet, and rugby was a sodden, shambles played in a muddy bath... dance was all the people had left!

Sure, a ready supply of international soul, funk, and disco was available through the major labels (with a 40 per cent sales tax to boot), but the time was right for local artists to pour their souls and accents onto vinyl.

Colour, clothes and sex began seeping onto the dance floors as kids watching televised music clips at home were turning to their parents: “Is that a boy or a girl?” New Zealand would never be the same again. A new generation was taking over and they wanted to boogie.

A new group of faces was taking to the dance floors. People like Mr Funky, people who’d stepped out in style and wanted to get down with their own bad self. A funky revolution was brewing with bands that’d been mired in the middle ground now swerving into sounds more suited to the disco than a rugby club social. Other bands broke from cabaret and stopped being the show to fuelling the show.

These then are the songs that drove a country from black and white to technicolour, and being a scene born in total isolation it took turns that weren't heard anywhere else.

This is funk, soul and disco as it would’ve sounded if Studio 54 had been set up within five minutesof a dairy farm, a rugby club and a marae, and if nothing else it finally let people to dance because they simply wanted to.

Heed The Call! collects the best New Zealand soul, funk, and disco from the afrotastic days of 1973 to 1983. Artists like Mark Williams whose House For Sale became a northern Soul grail, The (three) Yandall Sisters (two of whom feature behind Mark WiIlliams on our cover), a teenage Tina Cross, Dalvanius & Prince Tui Teka; all became New Zealand household names. This collection mines overlooked nuggets from their respective catalogues alongside lesser known boogie cuzzins like The Pink Family with their non-secular floor sizzler Don't Give Your Life Away, the gritty gospel soul of Sonia & Skee, The Johnny Rocco Band, Inbetweens, and The Totals. The Kaukau brothers were four fifths of Golden Harvest and hit the national charts with the number one I Need Your Love in 1978 featuring 17-year-old singer, Karl Gordon, in yellow satin and parachute pants. Local 60s beat pioneer Larry Morris, fresh from the big house after a public LSD misdemeanour, finds his groove on Who Do We Think We're Fooling. Funk dynamos Collision, hailing from Tokoroa where they’d played as The Shriek Machine, move to Australia on the mafia’s coin and Dalvanius’ insistence to record the showstopper, You Can Dance. Early 70s Acid Rockers Ticket flaunt their funky flare(s) with their Vertigo single only release Mr Music (later covered by Collision) while windy city fusion jazzers The 1860 Band take form fitting self promoting t-shirts to the next level while re- interpreting Rita Jean Bodine's Thats The Kind Of Love.

First Word close out 2017 with the return of Kaidi Tatham, following up his 'Changing Times' EP for us, with another killer 4-tracker - this one entitled 'Hard Times'.

To bring you up to speed, Kaidi is probably best known for his work with Bugz In The Attic. His body of work includes musical contributions for artists including Amy Winehouse, Slum Village, Mulatu Astatke, Soul II Soul, Leroy Burgess, Amp Fiddler, Macy Gray, King Britt, DJ Spinna, Mr Scruff and IG Culture.

Earlier this year, he was an integral part of DJ Jazzy Jeff's incredible PLAYlist project, most notably releasing the album 'Chasing Goosebumps', also featuring Glenn Lewis, Stro Elliot, Masego, Daniel Crawford and a whole host more. Most recently he was part of Jeff and Will Smith's (The Fresh Prince) reunion tour across Europe, and added releases to his already impressive catalogue on 2000 Black and Theo Parrish's Sound Signature, with regular compadre, Dego.

The EP kicks off with the title track 'Hard Times', a mid-tempo slice of infectious nu-funk. 'I See What You See' starts with Kaidi's infamous rhodes licks, before dropping to some heads-down latin-tinged percussion and hefty basslines. We maintain the latin funk bruk boogie with the mighty 'Super Lion', and close out the set with a soaring synth and lush piano-led 105BPM groove called 'We All Breathe The Same Air'. Each track exemplifies the articulate proficiency of Kaidi's talents, and cement just why he's so revered by so many.

Arp Frique is Niels Nieuborg from the city of Rotterdam, who has been actively involved in the Dutch live music scene for years, working with Cape Verdean & Surinamese musicians especially. After all these years, he finally presents his own true musical output.

These are set free on “Luna’s Groove”, a star-chasing collection of nouveau post-disco works, crafted in earnest with dancers in mind. Best known to most people for his early work as a Portishead collaborator and International tour DJ, Andy Smith earned his ‘Legendary’ title among crate diggers in 1998 when he released seminal mix album ‘The Document’. In the years since, Andy has continued to live up to his reputation as one of the finest and most creative DJs on the planet, tirelessly digging in the crates and emerging with pure gold. Following in the footsteps of his 2006 exploration of Trojan’s mighty reggae vaults and his two compilations exploring funk music from New Orleans and Jamaica, Andy turns his attention to disco and boogie for the very first time.

The concept for ‘Reach Up – Disco Wonderland’ was born from ’Reach Up’, a DJ collective founded by Andy in 2012 to reflect the spirit of legendary NYC clubs such as Paradise Garage and Studio 54. ‘Reach Up’ showcases 80s boogie, disco and proto house; the foundations upon which dance music culture was built.

Fresh off his album for Black Riot!, Amp Fiddler drops a follow up for Detroit's Mahogani Music!

Amp Fiddler's fourth album, Amp Dog Knights, is being released on Moodymann's Mahogani Music label this November. 

The album was made at the Camp Amp studio in Detroit and features two tracks partly produced by the late J Dilla, who was taught how to use an MPC60 by Amp Fiddler, plus a collaboration with Moodymann, real name Kenny Dixon Jr, who co-curated the whole record. T3, an original member of Slum Village alongside J Dilla, also features on the LP, as does Theo Parrish collaborator Ideeyah. "Those are my friends," says Amp Fiddler. "I love the way they work, I love the way they do things."

Spacetalk Records’ first compilation, Beauty, offered listeners the chance to take a trip through the record collection of noted Parisian crate-digger and DJ Jeremy Underground. It was a runaway success, so the label has decided to repeat the exercise. This time, though, they’ve turned to a lesser-known hunter of rare and obscure records, namely Crown Ruler Records co-founder Jeremy Spellacey.

Don’t be fooled by Spellacey’s lower profile: amongst those who know, the Melbourne-based New Zealander is widely regarded as a seriously dustyfingered digger, capable of unearthing and championing ridiculously good records from all four corners of the globe. He sells some of these exceptional finds through his Crown Ruler online store, though there are many more that he keeps hidden from the public.

Spellacey has previously shied away from sharing the secrets of his extensive record collection. Crown Ruler Sound, then, is a rare treat: a gloriously colourful, sun-baked compilation of tropical treats from Africa, the Caribbean and beyond, hand-picked by the man who helped license this year’s most essential reissue, the South African boogie brilliance that is Focus’s Zulu.

From synth-laden Zambian reggae and sumptuous orchestral Afro-soul, to humid Trinidadian boogie and horizontal Italian jazz-funk, Spellacey offers a whirlwind trip through the most kaleidoscopic and exotic parts of his epic collection.

As you’d expect from a man who has traveled the world hunting down records, the majority of the 15 tracks will be unknown to all but a handful of similarly minded crate diggers. In fact, some are so obscure that you’ll struggle to find any mention of them at all online. This could be your only chance to own the boogie-era reggae-disco brilliance of Le Banda De Martin’s “Mi Dueno” and the tear-jerking Afro-soul shuffle of Kosmik 3’s “I’m Gonna Pack” (here featured in exclusive Jeremy Spellacey re-edit form).

Highlights come thick and fast, from the first note to the last. Check, for example, the wild P-funk of Acayouman’s “Funk Around”, the dancing marimbas and undulating grooves of Feladey’s “Forest Music” and the impeccable South African jazz-funk of Stimela’s sought-after 1983 debut single, “I Love You”. Other notable highlights include Ezy & Isaac’s spellbinding 1977 cut “Let Your Body Move (Oba Balu Balu)”, seemingly the missing link between Rotary Connection, Fela Kuta and soundscape disco, Devon Russell’s inspired reggaesoul cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move on Up”, and Mike Fabulous’ “Wang East”, a sublime chunk of summery electro-reggae from Spellacey’s native New Zealand.

The two tracker arose after Sadar Bahar discovered Ben's Utrecht based studio (housing 60 synths!). Electro fiend Ben was charmed by the electronic elements in Sadar's funk and Sadar loved Ben's ideas. Nuff said, a new NL based project was born. Nothing sampled for these tracks... only stabbing guitar, bass, sax and pounding drum programming for dance floor heat!
